Meet the Mergies: Matt Doherty
Welcome to another edition of Meet the Mergies, a content series that spotlights the wonderful humans who work at Merge.
Today’s edition features Matt Doherty, a technical solutions engineer who works out of our NYC office.
Matt plays a critical role in helping prospects evaluate Merge and decide whether it’s the right integration solution for their product. He’s also instrumental in helping our internal teams gather the feedback they need to prioritize specific product improvements and enhancements.
You can read on to learn more about why Matt joined Merge, what he works on day-to-day, why he likes working here, and more!
1. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In the warmer months, I spend most of my time sailing or golfing; while in the winter, you can find me skiing wherever snow is falling. I’m also a huge fan of live music, so I’m often going to concerts across Manhattan.
2. Where were you working prior to Merge?
I was in Wisconsin and worked for a healthcare software company called Epic Systems. That position was exclusively on the post-sales side, and it was pretty high stakes considering that we were dealing with patients’ medical charts.
3. What attracted you to Merge?
The most attractive part of Merge was the people. I had the good fortune of meeting most of the leadership team during the interview process, and I was blown away by their energy, thoughtfulness, and kindness.
The product was also clearly special. Having dealt with integrations at Epic, I was acutely familiar with the pain of maintaining parallel data streams.
In short, I knew I found a company that was going places, so I jumped at the opportunity.
4. What does your typical day at Merge look like?
Most of my day is spent working with prospects, where I’m evaluating their integration needs against Merge’s current and planned functionality.
This often means working with our prospects’ engineers, product managers, and CTOs to understand their product and how Merge can fit into it. To that end, I’m usually demoing Merge with detailed, client-specific, test criteria. This can include anything from basic authentication flows to webhook performance benchmarking.
When I’m not meeting with prospects, I work with internal teams, like engineering and product management, to improve the product. And given how much time my team spends with prospects, our insight is, to be blunt, highly sought after.
5. What do you like most about working at Merge?
The culture! Merge is a lively and comfortable atmosphere where anyone can ask and say anything. We also come from a broad range of backgrounds, and that’s helped us connect even further—both professionally and personally.
6. What keeps you excited about working here?
The pace of development never ceases to amaze me. In my short time at Merge, we’ve shipped 4 API categories and over 100 unique integrations, along with dozens of major features. Given how fast things move here, there’s always something to learn, something to reflect on, or something to help build.
