Test your integrations before pushing them to production
As you build integrations in the 3rd-party solution, you might inadvertently miss a step or set up a step incorrectly. You might be able to identify these errors by carefully reviewing the integration and asking peers to review it as well, but the best way to pinpoint them is by testing the integration within the application and seeing if it works as intended.

Designate specific resources to your integration tool
Your 3rd-party integration tool likely has a somewhat steep learning curve. As a result, asking several employees to use the tool can take up a lot of their time and come at a high cost to your business (especially when you need engineers to use the solution).
To minimize the number of employees who are involved, it may be worth designating a few of them to be the application’s “power users”. These individuals can perform all of the tasks in the application, either for themselves or on behalf of others.
Start the relationship with the vendor by only building a few integrations
The more integrations you build with the 3rd-party integration solution, the more difficult it becomes to move away from them.
With that in mind, you should start by only building 1 or 2 integrations and see how the experience goes across various dimensions. This includes anything from the time it takes to push the integrations live to how the integrations perform to the customer support the vendor provides. 3rd-party integration solutions for internally-used applications
Here are some of the most common options:
iPaaS
An integration platform as a service (iPaaS) is a cloud-based solution that lets you integrate SaaS applications, databases, on-premises systems, and then implement data flows that work across them.
The platform offers pre-built application connectors and automation templates to help fast-track integration and automation development. It also offers some visibility on the performance of your integrations.
That said, in spite of their branding, iPaaS solutions often aren’t low-code. As a result, your engineers may have to be the ones who use the platform to build and maintain integrations. In addition, iPaaS solutions generally offer limited management capabilities; you can see when issues occur and the volume of issues that transpire, but your team still needs to determine the root causes of the issues and how to best address them.
RPA software
Robotic process automation (RPA) software uses scripts (or “bots”) to automate routine tasks that employees would perform. This can be copying and pasting information across applications, running simple computations on a spreadsheet, adding email attachments to a client’s page in your CRM, and so on.
RPA software is ideal when the applications and/or data you want to access are hard to reach (e.g. they don’t offer APIs). However, the application often requires technical expertise to use, and the bots can require significant maintenance over time (any changes to a UI can affect a bot).

Embedded iPaaS
An embedded iPaaS is simply an iPaaS that can be embedded directly into your product.
You can deploy it in a few different ways. For instance, you can build and maintain the integrations on your clients’ behalf and simply allow them to access the integrations; you can let clients build the integrations themselves within your application; or you can adopt a combination of both approaches.
While an embedded iPaaS accelerates integration development when you compare it to building integrations natively, the solution forces you to build integrations one at a time. Also, like an iPaaS solution, it requires technical expertise to use. Taken together, it’s clear that the solution makes it difficult to scale product integrations.
Unified API
A unified API solution, which is also referred to as a universal API solution, offers a single, aggregated API. Once you build to the API successfully, you can access several integrations in a specific category of software (e.g. ticketing).
